Violence against Jummas continues in CHT; Once again military backs muslims settlers to grab land of Jummas in Khagrachari

KHAGRACHARI, MAY 21: Muslim settlers with the help of Police and Army continuously attack the Jumma communities to evict them and grab their lands in the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT). A huge group of muslim settlers went to grab the land where Police and Armies have seen along with them at nearby a Buddhist Monastery in Babuchera under Dighinala  sub-district of Khagrchari this morning. The Muslim settlers carried dangerous items like axe, garden hoes and long sticks.

Even after more than 20 years of of the peace accord between Jummas and the Bangladesh government, campaigners have raised concerns that successive Bangladeshi administrations have failed to implement this vital agreement, or protect the Jumma.

The Jummas continue to face endemic violence, land-grabbing and intimate violence, land grabbing and intimidation ion on their ancestral land in the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT). Jumma women and girls are frequently subjected to rape and sexual assault.

The Bangladesh government has been moving Bengali settlers onto the lands of the Jumma tribal people for more than 60 years. The Jummas have gone from being practically the sole inhabitants of the Hill Tracts to now being outnumbered by settlers
