Landslide kills Chakma family in Rangamati


RANGAMATI, JUNE 13: A Chakma family of three were killed in an incidents of landslides triggered by heavy rainfall in Boro Kul Para of Rangamati district, CHT on Tuesday.

The Victims were Surendra Lal Chakma, 48, his wife Rajjo Debi Chakma, 45, and their daughter Sonali Chakma, 9, and another boy Rumen Chakma, 12.

In another incidents, Phul Devi Chakma, Ety Chakma and a two-year-old child were killed in Darmachandpara. Rita Chakma and Riten Chakma were identified among the dead in Hatimara area.

The Additional deputy commissioner (General) of Rangamati district Shafi Kamal said “In the morning, 11 people were killed and three were injured at Naniarchar upazila due to landslides triggered by incessant rain. The incidents occurred in remote hilly areas. The bodies of the dead were recovered and the injured given treatment.”

Last year, a series of devastating landslides claimed the lives of at least 170 people. As many as 120 of them were killed in Rangamati district alone. Experts blame reckless hill cutting and deforestation as the main reasons for landslides in the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT). Jahangir Alam, former vice-chancellor of Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology, blamed rampant tree felling and hill cutting for the landslides in the region.
