Indian Army: Two Chakma in Blue Helmets

Dr. Phalgooni Chakma, Commandant in the Assam Rifles and Major Ben Johnson Chakma of the Indian Army. They were deployed for UN peace keeping missions last year. The UN has awarded both of them with UN peacekeeping awards for the outstanding services.

Major Ben Johnson Chakma got promoted from Indian Army Captain to Major in 2016, highest rank reached by any Chakma in the Indian military. Major Chakma was born on 22nd November 1986, he is the second child to Mr. Chandra Hansa Chakma who is also serving in Mizoram Police Department and Mrs.Bakula Chakma.

He has always been fascinated by police uniform which he got inspired from his father. He participated in scouts,guides and NCC in his school days, to pursue his dream in Army he applied for Sainik School and Rastriya Indian Military College (RIMC), Dehradun but unfortunately he missed the entrance exam.

After passing Class X in 2002 and class XII (Science) in 2004 from St.John's Higher Secondary School,Kolasib, he was offered B.Tech seat in Dr. D.Y Patil College of Engineering, Pune through Mizoram STEE quota but he declined the seat.

At the age of 17 he joined Indian Airforce as an Airmen in technical grade in 2005. He also happened to be the first Airmen from Mizoram in technical grade.

While still serving in Indian Airforce he did his graduation through correspondence and at the age of 21 he cracked Combined Defence Service Examination (CDSE) in 2009 and SSB in 2010 and joined Officer Training Academy (OTA), Chennai. He passed out in September and got appointment in academy as a Junior under officer.

He later joined his unit as the first Mechanised Infantry officer and as he was a part of unit history his CO got a BMP (Infantry combat vehicle) named after him. He served in unit as a recce Pl cdr which is akin to Commando Pl of an Infantry unit.

He got commissioned in Indian army on 17th Sept. 2011 as a Lieutenant and got promoted to a Captain on 17th Sept. 2013 and again on 8th Sept.2016 he got promoted to Major.
