Diyun, December 22: This was the first time that Arunachal Pradesh Chakma Students' Union (APCSU) has taken the voter cards issue at hands toiling day and night by getting done the Chakma people’s applications online.
Especially in the month of November 2014 in which special revision of the electoral roll 2014 has been put into. Many hundreds, hundreds applications had been submitted by the Chakma people this time. However, leave it for approval, many applications not even been put into the system (in true sense, many applications have not been accepted). And this has drastically reduced the number of would be the Chakma voter card holders in the draft electoral roll 2014 of the State Government of Arunachal Pradesh. The final draft roll will come out on January 5th, 2015.
This issue of issuance of voter cards to the Chakma-Hajong communities of the state has been one of two issues (other one the citizenship) of Committee for citizenship rights of Chakmas and Hajongs of Arunachal Pradesh (CCRCHAP) more than a decade; however, this committee got no headway till today.
In 2004, the first time Chakma voters were 1457 and in this year’s first half i.e. till June, 2014, the numbers of Chakma voters were just 1615. The percentage of increase in number of Chakma voters has been just negligible in true sense. Just 152 voters added to the Chakma voters list in the last decade.
APCSU thought and thought that if this trend goes on like this, then Chakma people won’t be able to get their franchise right even in the next 100 years. So, APCSU has taken this very august issue at hands and there is a reason to cheer up though a bit! 500 plus new chakma voters have been added
