Diyun, May 07: The rights organizations of Chakmas including CCRDC and APCSU appealed Deputy Commissioner, Chanchal Yadav for Employment Opportunities for Chakmas under MGNREGA and SSA and Inclusion in Public Distribution System (PDS).
After a patient hearing, DC opined that most of the Chakmas are not citizens of India so it is not into her jurisdiction to implement such schemes and suggested to approach higher authorities for the same. Though, she has assured up gradation of Govt. Secondary School, Diyun.
The delegates informed her that MGNREGA is being implemented in Diyun, Bordumsa, Kharsang and Miao Circle but none of the Chakmas are being covered under this ambitious scheme of the Central Government. There are many eligible Chakmas but sadly none of them were employed under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) or in paramilitary services or any of the service of the State Government in any point of time.
Till 1987, Chakmas were provided with Ration card and special concession for Rice, Sugar, K. Oil etc. However they are deprived of these facilities now. They are not included in Public Distribution System (PDS) and are not provided with Ration card, BPL, APL card etc.
CCRDC and APCSU also informed DC that Chakmas are an agrarian society and mostly dependent on monsoon and rain, but due to bad monsoon and scantily rainfall, the people could not cultivate their fields this crop season. The price of rice is already soaring high at Rs. 26/- per kilo in the market, the drought has got everyone worried for the looming famine in the Chakma settlement areas.
The President of council for Citizenship Rights and Development of Chakma, Mr. Prahlad Chakma said that they will take up the issue with higher authorities and it is one of their main agenda for the long run.
