Agartala, 9th May, 2018: The BJP government of Tripura on 27th April '2018 had notified the reconstitution of Advisory Committee for Development of Chakma Language. The latest development is a feat for the Chakmas as they have been fighting CPIM government’s negligence to save and develop Chakma Script and Language for decades.
The new Advisory Committee for Development of Chakma Language will be headed by young and dynamic MLA Sambhulal Chakma. Ratan Lal Nath, Minister of Law & Education, Tripura and Santana Chakma, Minister for Social Welfare & Social Education are its patrons. It Committee also include other re-known personalities from the field of Education, Literature, Social works and Language expert.
Tripura Chakma Students' Association (TCSA) pioneered the fight for development of Chakma script and language. They also have pioneered Chakma Cultural Movement throughout the Country. Chakma Bizu Dance showcased during the Tableau parade of 69th Republic Day was a proud moment for all the Chakmas of India.
Many indigenous peoples worldwide have stopped passing on their ancestral languages to the next generation, and have instead adopted the majority language as part of their acculturation into the majority culture. Furthermore, many indigenous languages have been subject to linguicide (language killing). Recognizing their vulnerability, the United Nations proclaimed 2019 the International Year of Indigenous Languages, "to draw attention to the critical loss of indigenous languages and the urgent need to preserve, revitalize and promote indigenous languages."
Though the CADC government and Tripura government makes effort to promote and develop Chakma language and script, however the situation in Arunachal Pradesh is alarming. If no such efforts are made, linguicide of Chakma language is imminent in Arunachal.
